BBC Radio Kent Cost of missed patient appointments
Julia Manning, Chief Executive of 2020health spoke to BBC Radio Kent Breakfast about missed hospital appointments. Tens of thousands of DNAs (did not attend) were recorded in Kent in the 2014-15 financial year at a cost of 22million pounds to the NHS in the county. This is the equivalent of training 1,000 new nurses. Dominic King, Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, who has been studying the figures, discussed how Trusts had been using text message reminders stating how much missed appointment costs. Although research showed this resulted in 25% less DNAs, Julia said that more could be done by looking further into why people were missing appointments.
