Gail Beer, Director of Operations at 2020health, talked to Lisa Aziz on LBC's Morning News about the Medical Innovation Bill, that is being presented in the House of Lord’s today. Gail makes the point that the current system is risk adverse and Doctors who do offer innovative treatments, when all else has failed, at present, risk prosecution if the patient dies. Many patients are willing to try new treatments, not only to try and control their own illness but to help further research that may improve outcomes for future patients. There will be concerns about coercion by clinicians or relatives, but this Bill addresses these points. NHSEngland will ensure that good practices are put in place nationally and monitored both at the centre and locally. The Bill has had an enormous positive response to it’s public consultation. The public understand and accept that these treatments may carry a risk and, if when fully informed, they are both able and willing to take that risk, we should not stop them.
