Undernourishment is being seen in both the haves and have-nots.

2020health joins together with The Trussell Trust and Morrisons today at the Labour Party Conference to raise the issue of Malnutrition: what is food poverty doing in the 21st century?

The stereotype of malnutrition needs to be challenged: it is found today in those who are obese and those can afford food, as well as children and the elderly and those who have fallen on hard times.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre reported in August 2014 that in the last year alone that there had been a 19% increase in the number of UK citizens who had been hospitalised for malnutrition. A rise from 5,469 to 6,520 . According to NHS figures, around one in three people admitted to hospital or care homes in the UK are found to be malnourished or at risk of malnourishment . Malnutrition affects the function and recovery of every organ system, stunts growth in children, increases the risk of infection, extends hospital stay and makes readmission more likely .

Julia Manning, Chief Executive of 2020health said: “The new Trussell Trust food-bank usage numbers out today along with the rise in hospital admissions for people with malnutrition, up 19% this year and a staggering 71% over the past 5 years, both demonstrate that people desperately need more help with accessing a balanced diet. This has to start with education in school – developing an understanding of good nutrition, cooking and budgeting for food. We understand that the Trussell Trust are also looking at offering more food and finance information and education for the families being referred to them, which is so important too. 2020health’s forthcoming October report on Eating sets out a raft of new ideas for a cross-cutting strategy to improve the nation’s nutrition, reduce obesity and enable access to a healthy diet”.
