AXA PPP Health Tech & You Press Notice Judges & Winners Quotes

The AXA PPP Health Tech & You Awards winners were determined through an expert judging panel comprising of 33 health industry professionals and leaders. Please see below quotes from the lead judge of each category, providing a summary of why each winner was selected.

Judges’ comments came from a range of experts including health professionals, health technology executives and healthcare providers.

Winner - Brush DJ

‘It was a privilege to be part of the Keep Me Healthy panel. There were some excellent initiatives. BrushDJ stood out as a free app which would appeal to children of primary school age. I could imagine my children using this app, listening to their own music whilst brushing. Gum disease in children is a big problem and BrushDJ will get young people thinking about good oral health. Ben Underwood’s passion for improving dental health and his personal commitment to this initiative was great to see.'

Debbie Cook, Chief Executive NASS

"It is an honour to win the Keep Me Healthy Category and to have the Brush DJ app showcased in the Design Museum. I hope people enjoy using the free app and visiting the exhibition."

Ben Underwood, Dentist & APP Developer

Winner - Eykos

‘We looked for technology that would make a difference to patients, helping them to better manage their own health and their condition. The winner is a fantastic example of the patient taking more control. It moves the care and monitoring back to patient level. This product was the most focused on managing a condition and keeping people out of hospital. It demonstrated real benefit to the patient. This clever technology changes the health landscape.’

Dr Steven Iley, Medical Director Health Services, AXA PPP healthcare

"Aseptika is thrilled to have been awarded first place for 'Manage My Condition' for the Activ8rlives Health Monitoring System and EyKos, our future home testing system to forewarn those who suffer recurrent chest infections of an impending flare-up. The AXA PPP Health Tech & You award recognises the years of work invested by our in-house team, our clinical and technical collaborators and our patient volunteers. It also validates the on-going investment in UK SMEs like Aseptika by SBRI Healthcare and Innovate UK, without whose support, none of this could have been achieved."

Kevin Auton, Managing Director, Aseptika

Winner - Otoscope & Opthalmoscope

‘We selected this product because it is a simple idea with broad applicability. It offers an excellent way of dealing with childhood ear infections, and has the capacity to break down barriers between patient and GP. The ability to manufacture cheaply and ship to remote areas is both fascinating and useful.’

Dr Zahid Latif, Head of Health + Care, Innovate UK

"The AXA PPP Health Tech & You awards are a fantastic platform to raise awareness of the incredible ecosystem of healthcare innovation in the UK. As a company, it gives us great confidence that such a distinguished panel of judges shares our vision for how healthcare will be delivered in the future. It validates our innovation, that was inspired by how we feel we can improve the NHS, but that can also be used to extend access to healthcare for those living in less developed countries with limited healthcare resources around the world. This is an important time for Cupris as we look to launch our product later in the year, and the recognition of this award acts as a springboard to accelerate the growth of our company. We would like to thank the organisations and individuals that have supported us in our journey so far, particularly InnovationRCA, MedTech Campus, Innovate UK, SBRI Healthcare and the Digital Catapult."

Mike Pallett, Director, Cupris

Winner and Overall Winner - Babylon

‘Out of all the entries, babylon has the potential to reach the most amount of people and suses technology in a way that humanises rather than frustrates. It brings the best of online services into the healthcare space, giving users autonomy, control and sight of their own health. It crosses age, gender, social spectrum, lifestyle etc. and whilst it does not replace doctors it will make managing personal healthcare incredibly convenient and simple.’

Rama Gheerawo, Deputy Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design

Winner - Elvie

‘Elvie was selected because it tackles an issue that is seldom talked about. It’s an ingenious way to allow women to integrate Kegel exercises into their life, and was designed not to look like health equipment. These exercises not only improve general health but have a positive effect on mental wellbeing. The ability for women to self-monitor through the app also demonstrates an understanding of what is a sensitive and very personal issue.’

Paul Priestman, Co-Founder/ Director of PriestmanGoode

Winner - Baby Buddy

‘A truly inclusive and socially motivated innovation that will make a real difference to the lives of all parents. The app provides support in a way that does not patronise and forms a part of a service that will grow and continue to adapt to people’s needs. We loved that the idea is so ethically-driven, was tested with users and is so well resolved. The creators showed real passion and belief in their work, driving it from idea to real world service. It is informative, easy to navigate and very inclusive.’

Rama Gheerawo, Deputy Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design
