Press Comment MENTAL HEALTH CARE PROVISION NEEDS ‘A SHOT IN THE ARM’

Last week the NHS ‘Mental Health Taskforce’ unveiled its strategy, proposing changes to the provision of mental health care.

The report follows the publication of NHS figures showing a 21% increase in suicides amongst mental health patients in England over the last 3 years¹. Former Mental Health Minister, Norman Lamb MP has called for an investigation into this increase.

Julia Manning, Chief Executive of 2020health said:

“Whilst the Health and Social Care Act 2012 put more emphasis on the provision of mental healthcare, more immediate action needs to be taken. It is obvious that NHS mental health services are groaning under increasing demand, and the recent spate of suicides in care simply serve to highlight this. Mental Health provision urgently needs a shot in the arm to buck this tragic trend."

“What we want to see is more pastoral support in the places where people spend the majority of their time, which for most is the workplace. As we said in our report “Whole in One” last year, we feel that the appointment of local Workplace Mental Health Consultants would promote the prevention of and early intervention in mental health problems and lead to a healthier and happier workforce in the long term².”
