Dr Sarah Wollaston MP, Chairman, Health Select Committee

2020health Report Responsibility in healthcare: changing the culture

This report published in January 2010, builds on the idea of 'nudge', encouraging people to make the right choice. In this report 2020health asks how it is possible constructively engage with issues that stem from a culture of misplaced personal responsibility for our own healthy lives.

“Prioritising public health is key to increasing responsibility in healthcare. A focus on preventative treatments and technologies that involve patients in their own care will help individuals to take control of their health and gain a greater realisation of the consequences of their lifestyle choices. Greater access to health records will also enhance the relationship between doctors and patients and facilitate patients' growing interest in the care they receive from the NHS.”

Stephen O’Brien MP

  • An end to NHS funding of cosmetic procedures and treatment for conditions such as acne.
  • Common pain killers and cold remedies to no longer be available on the NHS.
  • Fines for people who routinely use casualty departments because of alcohol and drug misuse.

• Ideas in this report have repeatedly been picked up by the media including charging drunks for use of A&E; reviewing what services the NHS provides and a flat rate charge for all prescriptions.
