Anthony Nolan & 2020health Report A Road Map for Recovery

Ensuring every patient finds the care they need after bone marrow transplant. For someone with blood cancer, a bone marrow transplant is just the start of the road to rebuilding their life. Depending on their postcode, that road can be even harder than it needs to be.

Our report has revealed that the way in which NHS England provides for patients means many aren’t receiving the care they so desperately need – simply because of where they live.

That’s why we’re calling on the NHS and Department of Health to ensure that patients, and their families, get the treatment and support they need and deserve, wherever they are.

The aim of the research:

This publication was produced in conjunction with blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan having explored NHS provision for bone marrow transplant patients. The report revealed that the way in which NHS England provides for patients means many aren’t receiving the care they desperately need – simply because of where they live.

Impact:

• This report was created in conjunction with Anthony Nolan, and will form the backbone of their national survivorship campaign.
• Henny Braund, Anthony Nolan’s Chief Executive, said: “Right now, many post-transplant patients aren’t receiving the care they need, simply because of where they live. […] Your care should be determined by your condition, not by where you live and the hospital at which you are treated.”
• Dr Bronwen Shaw, consultant haematologist at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Chief Medical Officer at Anthony Nolan, says: “A transplant patient is a patient for life […] National guidelines to aid the ongoing assessment and treatment of patients post-transplant would go some way towards ensuring they feel empowered and in control of the next steps in their journey to recovery.”
