The Healthcare and Life Sciences sectors make a huge contribution to the UK economy and recent investment from companies demonstrate a continued commitment to the UK. The Government has stated its own pledge to seeing the pharmaceutical sector grow and thereby secure the UK as the place of preference to carry out R&D and develop new drugs.

Yet the UK does not lead the way on translational research and this increasingly the focus is as companies try and reduce the time it takes to get new drugs to market.

In this session we want to explore some of the challenges that the UK faces around:
· Rapid advances in biotechnology
· the development of new increasingly personalised drugs requiring an active translational research base;
· developing biomarkers;
· a growth in R&D in the developing economies and
· the USA looking to increase its market share.
